@bretdevereaux.bsky.social In my fantasy moments, I have hopes of local armed state forces interposing themselves, a la the Parisian National Guard in 1848. As hard as it is to fire on “respectable people”, it’s even harder to fire on “fellow soldiers” with guns of their own.

@ablaze The Newton & Lisa would like to have a word. ;)
@oatmeal Was Just read part 1 of your Creativity series and it reminded me of a friend’s saying from grad school:
“Perfect is pretty, but Done is beautiful”.
Also, John Conklin’s illustration of the creative process was the same.

@cherylrofer.bsky.social Daisy is an excellent doggo doing important scalar work! :D
@manton Orion is awesome—perfect blend of native Mac design and power user tweaks. The completely separate “apps” for each profile and tinting to tool bar makes it a snap to keep my banking websites separate from my general browsing, separate from social media.
@bretdevereaux.bsky.social Academy really does seem to be fostering a healthy environment for the future generations of scholars—they are making sure you get your steps in and practice solving obscure problems! 🤦🏻
@self.agency Responding to your posts policing the term “concentration camps”. When I get into arguments, I usually avoid the Nazis entirely. The Spanish created the concept and we set up plenty when we invaded the Philippines. Comparing Israel to Europe and the US “shouldn’t” be controversial.
@Bruce @michaelhobbes.bsky.social Apologies for the weird formatting; I post via micro.blog. 🤓
@michaelhobbes.bsky.social When it’s not controversial for Haaretz to be publishing IDF soldiers’ accounts of war crimes by and mainstream papers in our country are fearful of acknowledgingthe possibility of genocide, you know something is drastically wrong with the Overton Window here.
@bigzaphod (I’m on micro.blog and replies are acting weird).
Welcome and I totally get it. I’m a lighting designer/theater maker in the nonprofit world. Making decisions about ticket prices is always fraught—everybody needs to get paid but we also want our work to be accessible.
@bigzaphod Just read your post about AI destroying @Iconfactory business model and subscribed to Tapestry (I don’t use it much but I think your company does good work).
Have you considered moving upmarket? $2/mo per user isn’t a lot of cashflow? ❤️🩹
@anildash.com Modi & Bibi are two peas in a pod. Just as talking about Bibi’s crimes are verboten in our country so are Modi’s. Christian Zionism is pure Islamophobia. (Jewish liberal zionism is more complicated given what we were taught in Hebrew school).
@anildash.com Also, “Two Jews, Three Opinions”. Plenty of younger Jews in New York are anti-zionist and plenty of the liberal zionist Jews hate Bibi’s & Trump’s guts.
All Gillibrand has done is tank her approval rating in the city. Her local office line was jammed last week when I called to express my anger.
@anildash.com She’s just another oblivious suburban politician who knows nothing about local NYC politics.
Hint, when a local liberal Jewish politician has crossed endorsed a candidate, you aren’t going to make accusations of antisemitism stick. Even liberal zionist Jewish voters care more about local issues. 🙄
@anildash.com The local Democratic Parties have come around pretty quick. The leader of the Brooklyn Machine (which produced Adams) immediately endorsed Zohran. Because she’s not an idiot and realized it’s better to be on the next AOC’s good side rather than piss off our next mayor.
@bretdevereaux.bsky.social I feel just about the same way about anti-zionism. As a Jew I am heir to 2,500 years of ongoing debate and some gentile fascists want to call me antisemitic?
Please. Come to one JVP shabot dinner; we’ll tear your ideology apart and crack you up at the same time.
Saith the Sainted Mel Brooks.
@remapradio.bsky.social Hi there. Thanks for reposting my little joke. I recently wrote a short story entitled A Genderqueer Yiddish parable about non-violent Marxist revolution for the goys. I figured you folx might like it and, if so, I would love your feedback. :)
@frankm There are a lot of ways short of Congress terminating a useful piece of legislation. They can use their already broad powers of oversight and the purse to bring the Presidency to heel. Up to and including impeaching and convicting Trump and replacing him with Vance. Trump is the root of the problem but to save our Republic, we need to reform the Republican Party so it no longer is susceptible to reactionary authoritarians.
Impeachment is a step before revoking a delegation of powers that will have to be restored anyway. Better to purge the authoritarians and to amend the legislation on a bipartisan basis later.
(Politically, I’m an Elizabeth Warren Democrat. Left-liberal. I’m no fan of the Mitt Romney’s of the world and I’m glad he never became President. But I also recognize in a healthy Democratic Republic there must be the possibility of Mitt Romney becoming President lest you eventually get a Trump after years of reactionary authoritarians like Mitch McConnell undermining democratic legitimacy so every conservative short of the Mitt Romney’s have bended the knee).
@remapradio.bsky.social “Fuck Capitalism & Keep Making Art?”
@remapradio.bsky.social I altered the file for use during a family members funeral: prototypical 1A speech from which I received no benefit and had no effect on the potential market. I know my rights, I know IP enforcement bots can be on Bluesky, & I don’t want to pay a lawyer. 😣
@Bruce @remapradio.bsky.social If it can work for a niche industry like mine (Nemetscheck makes it’s real money selling to architectural and engineering firms), I think it can probably work for the gaming industry. I bought a drm-free song off iTunes the other day and exercised my fair use rights.
@remapradio.bsky.social The keycard model has worked for professional lighting software: buy a license code and your Vectorworks CAD license is permanently attached to that. Nemetschek keeps old binaries freely available because current customers have old hardware. Pure cold-hearted business logic.
@manton This is the classic white liberal fantasy—that simply asking for the fascists to stop beating you will work. Nelson Mandela endorsed violent resistance to apartheid. Property violence is the stick that makes the carrot of caving to non-violent protest palatable to those in power.
@manton I know this sounds truly galaxy-brained but I wonder if there are some concepts from “a protocol for building decentralized social applications with a central identity” to governing a society that is becoming both more decentralized socially and centralizing in identity at the same time?
